Want to be pen pals? Well, I’ll write you anyway.

While some felt it was slow to start, everyone liked this book. It’s a broad-spectrum crowd-pleaser, and there is no mystery why it’s on the bestseller list.

Here’s the deal: Imagine if your grandma was a high-powered lawyer who spent her mornings trolling university presidents and writing fan mail to legendary authors instead of scrolling TikTok.. And she was going blind. That’s Sybil Van Antwerp. She’s lived a full-ass life—mother, wife, divorcee, legal shark, garden club fanatic—and she processes all of it through the ancient art of letter writing.

Sybil is basically the original "keyboard warrior," but with better penmanship and way more decorum. When ghosts from her past start hitting her up via snail mail, she's forced to confront old trauma she’d rather leave buried, and continue investing in relationships in various stages of growth and death. This book is a reminder that even if you’ve "lived a life," you’ve still got work to do in the emotional gym (peace be the journey). It’s a small, intimate story, but it hits all the right notes in the emotional symphony.

If you’re into books about human connection, the power of literature, and old ladies who don’t take shit from anyone, grab your favorite ink well and settle in. This isn’t an action movie, but it’ll give your soul a decent growth spurt.

If you think letters are just things you get from the IRS, you may want to skip this—but TBH, everyone in the club who read it enjoyed it. So we recommend picking this book up, finding a pen pal, and writing someone a letter. You’ll thank us later.
